Children: lack of sleep fails on the Psyche

When children and adolescents go to bed on time, protects you might be also about to develop later psychological problems. This shows a Norwegian long-term study with almost 800 participants between four and 16 years.

Those who slept the least had the greatest risk, to suffer two years later psychiatric disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety or depression. Conversely, this was not the case: Psychological difficulties do not lead to the study results revealed that children slept less.

Sleep patterns ächanges in teenagers

With increasing age, more and more children slept less than seven hours per night. In the case of the six-year-olds, there were only 1.1 per cent, in the twelve-year-olds, 13.6 percent. Individual nights with too little sleep, increased of 15.1 per cent at the age of six to 64.5 per cent at the age of twelve. Six slept – until ten-year-old tends to be on weekends less, while older children slept on the weekend, longer, and more frequently during the week, too little sleep got.

"If we make sure that our children are sleeping enough, this can help you against mental health problems to schützen", summed up Bror M. Ranum, PhD student at the Institute of psychology of the Norwegian University of science and technology, the results.

Schlafbedürfnis is different

Children have a very different need for sleep: What is for a child to little, may be for a different more than enough. Ranum does not encourage parents to be aware of whether the child may fit poorly can focus or mood fluctuations. This could point to the fact that it gets may be too little sleep.
