Repeat after us: unless you’re experiencing physical pain or discomfort, your vagina is totally normal – no matter what size, shape or colour you’re packing. In fact, our appearance down there is just as diverse as any other body part. #believeit.
Still, the recent rise in labiaplasty surgery – that is, an operation to reshape or ‘trim’ the lips of the vulva – is truly mind-boggling. There’s no denying that for many Aussie women their lady parts are a major source of low self-esteem.
Here, via Reddit, 11 women with self-declared ‘large labia’ share how they feel about it:
“I had no idea that it was totally normal and common”
“I’d never seen long labia like mine.”
“I’m really self-conscious about it.”
“Every sexual partner I had enjoyed my labia quite a lot.”
“I used to be sooo insecure because I thought it was huge.”
“Sometimes it causes a bit or discomfort here and there but visually it is what it is.”
“Now I’ve realised that it’s just a normal body part.”
“I’ve also had guys compliment it before.”
“It annoys me that some women’s clothes assume you have a perfectly smooth crotch.”
“I’m not self-conscious about them because that’s what a normal vulva looks like.”
“Watch enough female-friendly porn and you’ll see labia of all shapes and sizes.”
