Three hundred people infected with Covid were involved in a clinical trial published in the prestigious international journal Gut Microbes. For 30 days, participants either took the Probio7 Professionals AB2 supplement or a placebo. Those who took the supplement were twice as likely to have no symptoms and to test negative for the virus. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction in viral load in the probiotic group compared to placebo.

As such, the results infer that taking Probio7 Professionals AB21 may prevent long Covid.

Delving into the details, the research showed that “complete remission” was achieved by 78 people out of 147 (53.1 percent) in the probiotic group.

Meanwhile, only 41 in 146 people (28.1 percent) in the placebo group was found to “complete remission”.

There was a “significant effect” on the duration of symptoms from “as early as three days” after supplementation.

The study also stated that Covid symptoms “lasted 3.3 days less” in the probiotic group compared to placebo.

What’s in Probio7 Professionals AB21?

Described as a “bacterial food supplement”, it is supposed to boost levels of healthy bacteria in the digestive system.

The research implies that a healthy gut can help clear Covid and offer new hope to long Covid sufferers.

The Centre for Translational Health Science Research in Mexico City led the study.

These findings add to the growing body of research in the role of the microbiome on health.

Commenting on the research, Staffordshire GP Dr Mike Brown said: “I was very impressed by this study.

“I would definitely think about recommending this type of health supplement for patients with Covid and long Covid.

“There isn’t anything else I’ve read about that’s been proven to have a benefit, so it is definitely worth considering.”

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) pointed out that fatigue was the “most common symptom” reported in those with long Covid.

Other common symptoms included: loss of smell, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing.

Long Covid was most prevalent in people aged between 35 to 69 years of age within the UK.

The NHS defined long Covid as symptoms that linger for weeks or months following the original infection.

“The chances of having long-term symptoms does not seem to be linked to how ill you are when you first get COVID-19,” the health body noted.

Other symptoms might include:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Insomnia
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Pins and needles
  • Joint pain
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Tinnitus, earaches
  • Feeling sick, diarrhoea, stomach aches, loss of appetite
  • A high temperature, cough, headaches, sore throat, changes to sense of smell or taste
  • Rashes.

To help manage any lingering effects of Covid, the NHS offer a support service called Your Covid Recovery.
